Yarn Bases

ABOUT OUR YARN BASES

We dye our unique colorways on specially selected yarn bases, ones we enjoy working with and that we use frequently for our own projects. We plan to expand our list of available bases over time – read more about our currently available bases below.

RADIANT SOCKa close up look at fine, tightly spun, lustrous yarn

This fingering weight yarn base is made from a blend of superwash Blue-faced Leicester wool (80%) and nylon (20%). Radiant Sock will feel smooth and shine brightly due to the unique qualities of this wool, categorized as a “luster longwool.” The fibers are finer, for more skin comfort, but also long and spun with high twist for increased durability. This yarn lends itself well to clearly defined stitches and draping fabrics.

Radiant Sock comes in hanks of 100g with approximately 400 yards per skein. This yarn has a lustrous, soft finish, and tends to take colorways in an intense yet blended character.

Please do note that while this yarn base is machine washable, superwash wool tends to grow when wet, and testing swatch behavior in the wash is recommended. Detergent designed for commercially made clothing can be too harsh for hand-dyed colors.

RUSTIC WORSTED

This worsted weight yarn base is made from Peruvian Highland wool, spun with a delicious, crispy squish. While not necessarily soft enough for sensitive skin, this yarn is wonderfully durable and versatile, a true “workhorse worsted” of the yarn world.

Rustic Worsted comes in hanks of 100g with approximately 220yds per skein. This yarn has a matte, almost glowing finish, and tends to take colorways in a softer and more blended character.

This yarn base should be washed by hand in cool water, preferably using a wash or detergent designed for wool. Sharp temperature changes and agitation while wet can cause felting. Hot water or inappropriate cleaners can be too harsh for hand-dyed colors.

WINDWARD BULKY

This bulky weight yarn base is made from a blend of Peruvian Highland wool (70%) and superfine alpaca (30%). The alpaca adds delectable softness to the yarn and greatly increases the amount of warmth without adding too much weight. It’s a perfect balance of cuddly & durable, knits up quickly for chunky sweaters and outerwear, and felts into an amazingly thick fabric that’s durable enough for totes and backpacks.

Windward Bulky comes in hanks of 100g with approximately 110yds per skein. This yarn has a slight sheen, and tends to take colorways in a deeper and more moody character.

This yarn base should be washed by hand in cool water, preferably using a wash or detergent designed for wool. Sharp temperature changes and agitation while wet can cause felting. Hot water or inappropriate cleaners can be too harsh for hand-dyed colors.

HERITAGE SOCK

Note: as of March 2020, we have discontinued our dyeing of this base due to supplier changes. We've left this information up for reference, since some already dyed skeins remain available for sale & some customers may need reference for skeins in their stash.

This fingering weight yarn base is made from a blend of superwash Peruvian Highland wool (75%) and nylon (20%). Heritage Sock will stand up to the test of time. Tight spin, a durable wool, and the addition of nylon make this yarn sock-strong. It lends itself well to the crisp definition needed for cables, or for a highly defined and draping lace.

Heritage Sock comes in hanks of 100g with approximately 357yds per skein. This yarn has a lustrous finish, and tends to take colorways with deeper intensity and sharper constrasts between tones.

Please do note that while this yarn base is machine washable, superwash wool tends to grow when wet. Detergent designed for commercially made clothing can be too harsh for hand-dyed colors.
